Most people buy a candle that smells like almost nothing, and the maker “solves” it by adding more fragrance oil. That is the fix you will see on every candle forum, and it is wrong. The problem is not how much oil is in the jar. It is whether the wax can hold it and whether the flame can carry it.
Skip the math everyone skips: fragrance load = fragrance oil weight divided by total candle weight, times 100. Industry guides give a range per wax: soy 6-8% (wicking problems get common above 7%), paraffin up to about 10%, coconut blends 10-12%, beeswax capped at 6-7%. The number that matters is the ceiling for that specific wax, not the bottom of the range.
What Happens Above the Ceiling
Push oil past what the wax can hold and three things show up on the first burn: the jar sweats (a ring of oil and water on the glass), the flame goes tall and smoky because the wick is carrying more liquid than it can vaporize, and the throw gets worse, not better. Excess oil does not burn – it pools and drowns the melt zone. A 10% soy candle is not a stronger candle; it is a failed formulation.
Cold Throw and Hot Throw Are Two Different Tests
Cold throw is the scent of the unlit candle, and it depends on oil volatility, not quantity. Hot throw is what the flame releases from a melt pool roughly 5 cm deep. A well-formulated candle at 6-8% beats an overloaded one at 10% on hot throw, because the wax holds the oil inside the melt zone where the heat releases it, instead of leaching it out early. More oil does not mean more scent – it means more oil the flame cannot use.
The 20-Burn Test
Before you judge the throw of any candle – yours or a vendor’s – run this: burn one full hour, cool for 15 minutes, cap the jar, and wait 12 hours. That is the test buyers actually run. On a soy blend, check that the melt pool reaches the glass wall on the first burn and is gone through the glass on the second. Tunneling means the oil concentration is high around the wick and the wax is rejecting the load.
If you are specing retail candles: ask for a burn log, not a fragrance percentage. A percentage is a claim; a log is data. Two numbers to demand: hours to a full melt pool, and hot throw measured at 2 meters after 12 hours capped. A supplier who refuses the log is selling you a number, not a product.
The lie costs money on both sides: makers throw away jars chasing scent, buyers buy a candle that smells faint and blame the fragrance. The 8% line is not a suggestion – it is the physics of the wax. Respect the ceiling and the throw fixes itself.
